By Adrianna Mills The holistic defence model envisions a transformation of the legal system as we know it — into a system that is interdisciplinary, collaborative, and centred around the needs of the client rather than practitioner. But what is it, how far are we from achieving it, and what can lawyers in Canada and the U.S. do to contribute to that goal?
The Criminal Law Students’ Association (CLSA) and the Correctional Law Association (CLA) teamed up to organize a panel this Wednesday to discuss just that. We had the pleasure of hosting the following speakers: Amy Slotek, Staff Lawyer and Project Leader at Legal Aid Ontario; Jessica Swensen, Director at the Centre for Holistic Defence with the Bronx Defenders; and Darcy Bellisle, Advisor at the Centre for Human Rights, Equity and Inclusion at York University. By Julia Pimentel Panel speakers:
Nicos Fassler, Deputy Crown Attorney Alexa Ferguson, defence lawyer, Heinein Hutchison LLP Chris Nagel, defence lawyer, CCSK Criminal Law Marie Comiskey, senior counsel with Public Prosecution Service of Canada Cate Martell, criminal defence lawyer focusing on appeals Panel organizers & moderators: Sophie Zhao, 2L CLSA executive member Simon Kim, 2L CLSA executive member Adrianna Mills, 1L CLSA executive member Held on Wednesday, October 28th, 2020 over Zoom By Cameron Cotton-O'Brien
Since he was called to the bar in 2005, Sean Robichaud has made a name for himself as a prominent criminal defence lawyer in Toronto. In addition to being lead counsel at Robichaud’s, a firm focused on criminal defence matters, Mr. Robichaud hosts the popular Of Counsel podcast, where he interviews prominent lawyers from across the province. Mr. Robichaud sat down with a writer from the Criminal Law Students’ Association to offer his perspective on criminal defence and how interested students can approach this field as a career. The interview has been condensed and lightly edited for clarity. |
